Microsoft resorting to FUD tactics

February 11th, 2009 by Wenslauw

It seems that Microsoft is resorting to FUD tactics to gain more customers. FUD stands for Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt.  According to wikipedia:

Fear, uncertainty and doubt (FUD) is a tactic of rhetoric and fallacy used in sales, marketing, public relations, politics and propaganda. FUD is generally a strategic attempt to influence public perception by disseminating negative information designed to undermine the credibility of their beliefs. An individual firm, for example, might use FUD to invite unfavorable opinions and speculation about a competitor’s product; to increase the general estimation of switching costs among current customers; or to maintain leverage over a current business partner who could potentially become a rival. FUD techniques may be crude and simple. Alternatively they may be very subtle, employing an indirect approach.

On slashdot.org I read an item about how Certified Microsoft Professionals call companies and warn them about the use of open source products… According to them everybody can read the code, so it’s dangerous to use it. As apparently everybody knows how to hack or break your systems… As if security through obscurity is a good tactic… It’s a new low for Microsoft.

One responde of a person using the nick TheSHADOW was particularly funny:”How about telling them that Microsoft has taken code from open-source operating systems like BSD (true) and people have discovered bugs which had been fixed long ago in the open-source versions, and missed in the closed-source versions BECAUSE they were closed-source?”
