OS X

leopardI’m slowly settling in and getting used to OS X. I’m not so sure it’s as intuitive as people are telling me, but it works well and there are some things I really like.

First of all it’s unix. It’s still the only OS I like working with. I need a decent command line interface.

I also like the way it installs apps. You just copy it from the install image. Applications are nothing more than folders. I have to find out what all the implications are of this though. Haven’t had time to do this yet.

It looks good. No clutter, no annoying pop ups every other second, like in Vista.

Time machine is brilliant. At least as far as I can see. I haven’t had to use it yet, but the idea that my system is being backed up all the time without me having to do anything about it, is very cool.

It feels quite fast and I never look at my system wondering what my hard drive is doing. It is what often happens in Vista. The hard drive light is flashing constantly and the system slows down considerably.

Also Apple laptops aren’t styled like American cars: Big fat, ugly, styling dating back to the 80′s and covered in cheap looking plastic… Well, except for the low-end Macbook of course… Not that Apple products are without faults… Mr. Jobs’ company has a habit of sending beta machines into the field… And the current iMacs have very slow video cards.

My company gave me a laptop. It’s a Dell Latitude D830. It’s the most hideous thing I’ve ever seen. The body flexes, so it can happen that the mouse pointer starts moving when I rest my palm on it.

When I got it Windows XP was installed on it. It felt very slow, so I installed Ubuntu on it. (Don’t tell the sysadmins at work…) When I went to work for a customer I got another laptop with XP and I found out that Windows machines always feel slow…

I hope to buy an Apple (laptop) some time in the first quarter of 2009.
